Backing Up Your Wordpress Blog

Before I move on to upgrading your Wordpress Blog, let’s talk about backing up the blog. Before you upgrade to a new release of Wordpress, it’s a good idea…or I’ll put this more strongly…you SHOULD back up your Wordpress Database and files.

This post will show you how to back up your Wordpress database using utilities in your CPanel. One of the many reasons I suggest getting a hosting provider that has Cpanel.

Log into your CPanel with the user name/password you received from your hosting provider when you set up your website. On CPanel, look for the PHPMyadmin icon.

select phpMyAdmin
Click on the phpMYadmin icon.

select databases

Next select the databases line marked here with a red arrow.

wordpress database

The next step you select your Wordpress Database. You probably will have only one database here. It might start with wp_ or whatever prefix the blog database was set up with. Select the database.

export tab

Click on the export tab at the top of the next screen.

database backup parameters

Here you see where you set up the parameters for the database backup.

EXPORT

Under Export all the tables should be highlighted. If not, click on select all. Make sure the radio button next to SQL is selected.

OPTIONS

Under options, select the box next to Structure then select the following:

  • Add DROP TABLE/VIEW/PROCEDURE/FUNCTION
  • Add AUTO_INCREMENT value
  • Enclose table and field names with backquotes
  • DATA

Select the box next to Data, but leave the rest of this section unchecked.

    SAVE as file

Under the Save as file option, leave the file name template just as it is. Click on zipped.

Click on Go. The database will be backed up and saved on your computer. My next post will be about backing up the actual files on your Wordpress install.

I’m anxiously awaiting the instructions on upgrading to Wordpress 2.5. *g* I’m not brave enough to try it on my own.
